Anchor Porter

Anchor Porter
Anchor Porter 5.6%

Being a huge fan of the illustrious Anchor Steam Ale, I decided the next on the list would be the Anchor Porter. The history of Anchor brewery is nothing short of lengthy and interesting. Consistantly moving buildings, changes of ownership, outlasting the prohibition, and introductions of new products. That being said, one thing I enjoy about Anchor is they (to my knowledge  stay true to the original recipes and methods of their humble beginnings in 1896. The Anchor Porter is one of the first of the forgotten porter-style beers in north america- being available to the public by 1974.

When first poured, an intimidating black brew comes from the bottle, with a thick creamy tan head that lingers around as it should. Notes of burnt malt and barley encase the nose, along with coffee and a slight bit of cinnamon-esq spice. Not having a whole lot of weight but making up for it in flavors of coffee, a deep-rooted toasted/burnt flavor, with sweeter notes of prunes and dark chocolate. Being 5.6%, the alcohol is looming within arms reach especially towards the end, holding the finish up high.

I always enjoy a beer with depth and a sense of charisma especially when it’s backed by a brewery with class and integrity. My friends said they couldn’t have more than one or two but personally I could enjoy this all night, in deep, rich and dark moderation.
